Emancipation Free At Last!The scene is a wedding. The bride and groom have just taken their vows. The bride hands something to her father, and he responds with a wide grin.>"What did our daughter just give you," the girl's mother asked. "My credit card," the father replied with satisfaction. Three people were asked when life begins. One said, "I believe it begins at conception." One said, "I believe it begins at the child's birth." The third one says, "it begins when the children grow up and move out of the house." We love our kids, and don't want to see them suffer, but not having to support them is a load off the old finances. If the parents are married, they can decide when the kids are old enough to take care of themselves. when the parents are divorced, or were never married, the state decides when the kids are "emancipated". This age can be as young as 18, or as old as 21, depending on where you live. There are things that can place a child on his own, no matter how old he is. When a child gets married, he is considered an adult. If she joins the military or gets a full time job, she can take care of herself. If she leaves her parent's home for no good reason, she can also be ordered to pay her own way. If the child is disabled, support can be continued indefinitely. If he is in college, the parents can be forced to pay in many states. If the child is out of high school, but not making enough to support herself, the court may be able to make the parents help. When is it safe to stop paying child support? If you're 18-year-old child gets married, or joins the military, you can quit paying. If she is over your state's age of "majority" or is no longer considered a child under your state's law, you're probably off the hook. However, your best bet is to go to court and ask the judge to rule on the issue. There is nothing like a decree declaring your child support obligation over to set you free. |
